[ENG] Sometimes it’s good to step outside your comfort zone because you end up finding real gems like this audiobook I listened to.
This book is set in 1910s New York, where our protagonist, Benigno/Benny, builds a tank for Luna Park (a kind of amusement park), and events unfold that lead him to join the park’s crew. So far, so good, but when he finds out that the tank is meant to hold a merman captive (yes, a male merman), his priorities shift, and that’s evident throughout the entire story.
To say my heart didn’t break for Rio (the merman) is an understatement; every word, every action, every SCENE of his just broke my heart more and more, and let me tell you, I was CRYING at work over this beautiful audiobook, the way the relationship between him and Benny grows into love, the boleros, EVERYTHING.
Of course, that ending left me ¿¿?? because, yes, it ends well, but with an open ending? We get an epilogue, but not from the protagonists’ perspective, so at least for me, it felt like an open ending, and I made up my own ending, haha (though it is made clear that both Rio and Benny are happy together).
It was a very beautiful story, a beautiful found family, and a very beautiful portrayal of Puerto Rican culture, which leads me to say that I’m grateful the end of the audiobook gave us SO MUCH of the book’s real historical context.
The narrators were SPECTACULAR; the Spanglish was perfect, and the voices, the way they conveyed every emotion were simply perfect for me.

[ESP] A veces es bueno salir de la zona de confort porque encontramos tremendas joyas como este libro que escuche.
Este libro esta ambientado en un New York de los a帽os 1910 donde nuestro protagonista Benigno/Benny, construye un tanque para Luna Park (una clase de parque de diversiones) y suceden cosas que hacen que el se una al crew de este parque, hasta aqu铆 todo bien, pero cuando el se entera de que el tanque es para mantener cautivo a un sireno (si, sireno hombre) sus prioridades cambian y eso se noto durante toda la historia.
Deir que mi coraz贸n no se parti贸 por Rio (el sireno) es decir mucho, cada palabra, cada acci贸n, cada ESCENA de el solo me part铆a mas y mas el coraz贸n y d茅jenme decirles que estaba LLORANDO en el trabajo por este hermoso audiolibro, como la relaci贸n entre 茅l y Benny va creciendo hasta convertirse en amor, los boleros, TODO.
Claro que, ese final me dejo ¿¿?? porque si, termina bien pero ¿con final abierto? nos dan un epilogo pero no de parte de los protagonistas as铆 que por lo menos yo, quede con que fue un final abierto y yo misma me invente mi final jeje (eso si, se aclara que tanto Rio como Benny est谩n felices juntos)
Fue una historia muy hermosa, un found family hermoso y una representaci贸n de la cultura de Puerto Rico muy hermosa, lo cual me lleva a decir que agradezco que el final del audiolibro nos dieran MUCHO de los contextos hist贸ricos reales del libro.
Los Narradores fueron ESPECTACULARES, el spanglish fue perfecto, las voces, como transmit铆an cada emoci贸n fue simplemente perfecto para mi.
